Michell in first place for javelin throw

After returning from the first ever track and field ISSEA with 25 medals and placing 3rd overall last year, this year’s track and field team is put under a lot of pressure.

Last year, the team consisted of only 13 male and 2 female athletes. However, the 2015 track team is a full one, made up of 28 athletes (14 of each gender). The team this year is  hoping to be as successful as last year’s, and maybe even more successful, having a totally competition-ready  team now.

Among last year’s successful athletes, you can find AJ (G12) Michell (G12) Anesu (G11)  and Pullen (G11) in the 2015 team. We asked these four athletes to give us an account of their previous achievements and their expectations for this year’s tournament.

AJ: “Last year I was consistently second because of this guy Karim, who’s only SLIGHTLY faster than me. I placed second for 100m, 200m, and 75×4 relay. My goals for ISSEA this year is to win EVERYTHING.”

Michell: “Last year I got a silver medal in shot put, a bronze in discus and I came 5th on javelin. This year I am just going to do my best for these three events, and I will also compete in triple jump. Hopefully I can get at least one gold.”

Anesu: “Last year I got a gold for javelin, a silver for hurdles, and a bronze for high jump. I also got a bronze for the team placing third overall. This year I’m not so sure I’ll do as well for javelin, but I think I’ve improved my running and my jumps. I also think that the relay team is really good this year”

Pullen: “Last year the boys came third overall, even though our numbers were limited. I got a silver for the 75×4 relay, and a silver for triple jump. I also got an all-stars team medal (gold). This year I am expecting to get a gold for triple jump, a silver or bronze for high jump, and another silver or a bronze for long jump, and a gold for the 75×4. For the team medals, us boys are planning to come first overall, and for combined overall -girls and boys – I hope we come first or second. I also think the girls will get a bronze or silver overall”

In order to achieve the goals the team and the coaches set themselves for this year, the team had to train extra hard. The training schedule comprised of  2-hour-long practice sessions occurring 3 days a week. Each athlete was strongly devoted to their events.

Athletes that trained with the team last year all agree that the training is a lot harder and more intense, but many of them also observe that “since the team is much bigger this year, it’s easier to get distracted and start fooling around. It’s also harder for Mr. Chi to see us fool around, ut fooling around helps us bond.”

Although the sport is composed of many individual events, the HIS team works together very well  together and makes sure each member achieves their personal goals for the good of the whole team.
